Windsong Dockbox: Windsong Dockbox - February

Windsong Dockbox

By Capt. Bruce & Capt. Wendy Longman

This month we are going all out on flares. In conjunction with the US Coast Guard and Pasco County Sherriff's Marine Patrol, The Boater's Corner is offering a FREE flare demonstration and instruction seminar at the North Anclote Sandbar on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 11 AM.

BRING YOUR EXPIRED FLARES AND JOIN US AT THE SANDBAR!

If you have your own boat, meet us at the North Sandbar at 11 AM. If you don't have a boat, Windsong Charters & Boat Rentals are offering a FREE RIDE to the Sandbar departing from Leverock's Restaurant Marina at 10 AM.

If you would like a free ride to attend the demonstration, you MUST sign up for it at www.WindsongCharters.com/flare - complete the form in order to reserve a seat on one of their boats.

Learning how to use pyrotechnics is extremely paramount. Knowing how to ignite them, seeing how they burn, and how the slag drops is important information. Pyrotechnics are dangerous! Another very good reason to attend our FREE flare instruction and demonstration.

If you have never ignited a flare before then this is a must for you to attend. If you ever find yourself in a dangerous situation you will need the knowledge and confidence to ignite the flare safely. Igniting pyrotechnics while panicking might not present a good outcome.

Old Expired Flares

Bring them with you so you can practice. Windsong will also be providing a limited number of expired flares.

According to Coast Guard regulations the shelf life for pyrotechnic devices is three (3) years from manufacture. It is also suggested that you keep the

Windsong Dockbox: Windsong Dockbox - November 2013

Windsong Dockbox
By Capt. Bruce & Capt. Wendy Longman

While many people think the end of summer means the end of boating, this statement couldn’t be any further from the truth! Autumn and winter are some of the best boating, fishing and shelling in our area. But we already knew that!

In this issue we want to discuss the importance of safe boating. In Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boater safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and a boater safety identification card.

Here in Gulf Harbors,

Windsong DockboxThis month we are going to continue talking about docking and close quarters maneuvering. But this time we are going to focus on sailboats or other vessels with a single engine inboard, such as a trawler.

Prop Walk
Propeller walk is the term for a propeller's tendency to rotate a boat.

A right-handed propeller rotates clockwise, as viewed from the stern when in forward gear. This rotation

 Windsong Dockbox: Bottoms Up!

Windsong DockboxIf you keep your boat in the water it has to be bottom painted in order to prevent barnacle growth. Winter is a great time to renew the bottom job on your boat as the cooler weather makes for less sweaty work and of course we don’t use our boats as often during the colder months.

How often should you repaint your boat?

Windsong DockboxLast month we discussed non-ethanol fuel and we received several requests from our neighbors where to buy ethanol free fuel. The closest gas station to Gulf Harbors, is a Citgo located at 7502 US 19 North, just before the Cotee River bridge on the right hand side.

Should you find yourself elsewhere in Florida with your boat, here is a complete list of all Florida cities offering ethanol free: http://pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=FL.

This month we are going to talk about safety on the water and some rules of the road. We will also be providing some useful online resources for weather and wind predictions so you can safely plan your day on the Gulf of Mexico.
