Fishing Club: Fish Tales Fishing Club News - January

Gulf Harbors
Meetings Every Third Thursday at 7 p.m.

As we approached the Holiday season our last meeting of the year was long but exciting. We wish all of the GHCA residents a Happy New Year. The Fishing Club continues to grow with one new member (Mike Napier) at our last meeting. We had twenty-one members attend the December meeting.

Captain Larry Lavin explained and demonstrated how to cast a bait net. It was very helpful. He showed us how to cast and told us where the best areas are to cast, and for what types of bait. He also gave tips on what his favorite chum is for the various baits. Did you know that for certain bait fish he a grits mix? These were just some of the things you can learn at our meetings.

We plan on having an educational speaker at every meeting. If you want to learn more about how to fish and where to fish, then attend our meetings. Mark Morningstar has done an excellent job on contacting and scheduling great speakers.

Fishing in the past few months has been excellent with many members telling us about the Grouper, Reds, Trout, Cobia, etc that they caught. Among the highlights, Steve Stein caught a sailfish near

Pasco 1 and a 39 inch Cobia off his deck, and Stu Johnson caught a 38 inch Cobia near the power plant and several Grouper off of Pasco 2.

Elections were held, and despite some vigorous challenges, the same people were re-elected. Ron Klapperich as President, Steve Stein as VP, Bob Richute as Secretary, and Bob Ray as Treasurer. Larry Lavin and Mark Morningstar stayed on as Tournament Chair and Speaker Chair, respectively. Wayne Brown and Stu Johnson volunteered to run the 2014 Garage Sale.

Additionally, it was agreed the club have an annual Largest Species Tournament. It will run for all of

2014. GHFC members can get a copy of the rules from Larry Lavin at larlavin@msn.com or at the meeting.

Our first tournament is for Spotted Sea Trout. It will run from January thru March. Other species will be added.

Everyone is invited to our meetings (men , women and children). Social timel starts at 6:30.

Meeting starts at 7:00. We are planning several family outings this year. Come to the meetings so we can get your input.
