 Social & Hobby Clubs: Gulf Harbors Yacht Club - Tuesday Golf League

CommunityAs a longtime Yacht Club member, many people ask me what I like about being a member of the GHYC. While there are many things I love about the dub; it's waterfront location, the fact my husband and I can go to dinner there by boat, great food, best bar in town, fun social events and more; there is really only one real reason we have remained members there so many years.

It's the people; the powerful friendships we have formed that make us feel we have an extended family. Let me give you an example;

my beloved father moved to West Pasco a couple of years ago to be close to me and my husband Kurt. His health was failing and he could no longer live on his own. He moved to Atria Windsor Woods, a wonderful adult living residence where he feels like "he is living at a resort".

They make sure he eats 3 squares a day, help him with his kitties, and provide many helpful services. All good, but one thing was missing. Dad is a life-time golfer, a true "golf nut". He told me he had "hung up his clubs", but I didn't want him to give up on his passion so easily. Where does the Gulf Harbors Yacht Club come in?

Well, the GHYC has a weekly scramble league at the Links, located just around the corner from Dad's place. The GHYC golfers gathered round and made it possible for my "dear ole dad" to join the league. Katherine Manware gets him there and back, Dick and Diane Bourbonais match him up with a compatible foursome and give him a ride to the Club after golf.

I must mention Vic Manocchio and Linda & David Champanois, and all the golfers as well, for their great support in getting Dad back "in the swing".

The league bends the rules for Dad (and others, of course); if he doesn't want to swing the club because his distance isn't there, he can just chip and putt, two things he does very well. I've heard he's a made lots of birdie putts and great chips for his foursome!

After playing consistently for a while now, he is really getting back into the groove and enjoying the game again.

What is that worth to us and our family? Priceless!

And that's why we belong to the Gulf Harbors Yacht Club!
