Fishing Club: Fish Tales Fishing Club News - May 2013

Gulf HarborsAt the March meeting there were 40 members and guests, the club is growing in members and interest. The guest speaker was Capt. Art Ickenberg of West Marine and Boat US. He brought in and demonstrated many safety items that should be on our boats. Life vests, flares and flare guns, radio, GPS, ditch bag, and other items, with explanations of what they were and how they worked.

Everyone wonders how an inflatable life vest works, so .... Capt. Art had one of our members put one on. He asked him to pull the line, rather than toss him in

the channel, so it would inflate. It wasn't near as surprising as everyone had expected. Within split seconds it opened and inflated with a little hissing and popping, no explosions.

During the month of March there were two club activities besides our monthly meeting.

We had a Trout and Redfish Tournament. 10 boats with 26 fishermen, including women and children, participated. The entry fee was $15 per person, $390 was collected. The club takes 10 out for the GHCA, the balance was distributed amongst the winners.

The second activity was our Fishing Club Family Picnic, which was held at The Angelus. Over forty club and family members attended. The Angelus grounds was a perfect place to have the picnic and the weather was perfect. Brats, burgers and hotdogs were grilled and everyone brought a pass-a-dish. No one had an excuse to go home hungry. After feasting, Capt. Richard Trench conducted a tour of the grounds, the residents houses, and the large log cabin Charlie Daniels built for the Angelus. During the tour they met and visited with some of the residents, many of whom were in Gulf Harbors on April 20th for the Special Needs Fishing Day. Everyone enjoyed the day.

Lastly - Don't forget the upcoming Garage Sale Start saving items. The Garage Sale will be on Saturday, October 26th. We will begin collecting items the end of August, of course, you can bring them to the hall the day before the Garage Sale. It looks like the Garage Sale will be at least as big and popular as last year.
