Woodlands Members Propose Sex Offender Deed Restrictions

WoodlandsWoodlands residents recently drafted additions to their deed restrictions requiring homeowners who lease their homes to conduct a criminal background check and to refuse leases to any prospect tenant who has been convicted of or has pleaded no-contest to sexual offense charges.

Members believe the proposed deed restriction addition would

help keep the Woodlands' community safer by keeping sexual offenders and predators off their community’s streets and help maintain their home values by keeping registered sex offenders from obtaining an address within the community.

Often, home buyers check the sex offender registry online prior to purchasing a home to see if there are any sex offenders or predators in the community. Having a sex offender in the community can seriously damage a seller’s ability to find or retain a buyer, and thereby, lowering the value of all homes in the community.

The proposed deed restrictions will be discussed during the next scheduled Woodlands’ Board meeting where residents can learn more about the proposed changes and ask questions. It is likely the language will be tweaked by Woodlands’ legal counsel prior to going to a required membership vote. Strong membership support in favor of the proposed deed restriction addition is expected.
